No. DentalCanvas only reads data from Open Dental. It cannot change, add, or delete any patient record, appointment, claim, or financial entry. The setup wizard walks you through connecting it in about two minutes.
Will it slow down our server or lock up OD?
No. DentalCanvas is designed to be lightweight: it reads data in the background without interfering with Open Dental. Most practices don't notice any difference in OD performance.
Does any patient data leave our network?
No. DentalCanvas installs locally and serves your office over your own network. No patient data is sent to any external service, period.
Which Open Dental versions does it work with?
DentalCanvas automatically adapts to your Open Dental version: it detects your version through the API and adjusts. It works with current and recent OD versions.
How long does installation take?
Under 10 minutes for most offices. Download the installer, enter your license key, connect it to Open Dental, and create your first user account.
We can already pull reports from OD. Why do we need this?
You can, but it takes time, and usually only one person in the office knows how. DentalCanvas is for the whole team: the office manager, the billing coordinator, and the front desk staff who need a training sandbox.
Is this a cloud product? Do we need internet?
DentalCanvas is a local install. Internet is only needed for license activation, auto-updates, and optional marketing integrations. Day-to-day operations work entirely offline.
What's the difference between the three tiers?
Command Center ($97/mo) covers the daily dashboard, patient flow, training, and analytics. Command Center Pro ($197/mo) adds the full insurance billing suite. Does it work with our Linux server?
Yes. If your Open Dental server runs on Linux, DentalCanvas connects to it over your network through the API. The app itself installs on a Windows machine, and every other computer in the office, including Macs and tablets, opens the dashboard in a browser over your LAN.
What about backups?
Your Open Dental data is untouched. If the machine dies, reinstall on another workstation, enter your license key, and reconnect. We recommend including the DentalCanvas folder in your existing backup routine.
Is this HIPAA compliant?
Yes. DentalCanvas includes a HIPAA mode that masks patient names, DOBs, phone numbers, and other PHI on screen. Sessions auto-lock after 30 minutes. No data leaves your network.
